Round 1 of 8: September

Gary Steele & Hagan de Villiers.

EXECUTIVE CREATIVE DIRECTORS, TBWA\ SINGAPORE

Gary and Hagan first teamed up at TBWA\Hunt Lascaris in South Africa. They soon racked up over 50 advertising awards between them and naturally decided to start referring to themselves in the third person. Like basketball stars do. And douchebags. Only one thing stood between them and advertising folklore. A neologism. Like Kimye. So after some thoughtful deliberation, they settled on Harry. Which, some claim, was a wiser choice than Gagan.

Fast forward a few years and continents later, and Harry are presently in South East Asia where they’ve picked up many more shiny things, but also (and it must be stressed) have separately attracted 2 exceptionally beautiful wives (who may be reading this), produced 4 gorgeous children, adopted 2 cats and housed 2 dogs.

No one ever refers to them as Harry. But they know it’s just a matter of time. Oh yes. Oh yes it is...

Brief: “They are blind because they are poor. They are poor because they are blind”

Get everyone who has some money, to give that money to these foundations.
— Gary Steele & Hagan de Villiers

There are around 7 million blind people in Indonesia. Over half of these people suffer from a certain type of blindness - cataracts. A condition that is curable, in most cases.

But in a part of the world where the minimum wage per month is under USD150, most of the sufferers can’t afford the surgery. As a result, they remain blind for most of their lives.

If that’s not tragic enough, the surgery itself comprises a simple procedure that takes a mere twenty minutes. And it can completely restore vision.

That’s just plain wrong. And something needs to be done about it.

Fortunately, there are a number of wonderful people out there working towards treating preventable blindness. The John Fawcett Foundation. Helen Keller International. The Fred Hollows Foundation. Google them. All the info you need is there.

Now go think of a way to get everyone who has some money, to give that money to these foundations.

Remember that this is about action, not sentiment. It’s not about feeling sorry for someone, but rather about touching someone’s heart enough to make him or her do something about it.

Thank you.

Let’s go help some folks out!
